I’ve got a friend who is swapping over to cloth part time to save money. So I figured I’d get her some disposable liners to help make the transition easier - so she doesn’t have to flush the poo away from the nappy. Normally I’d recommend flushable liners, but they are more expensive and she’s only interested in saving money. Since she’ll still be using disposable wipes she will have to make th trip to the bin and the nappy bucket each nappy change, so the disposable liners don’t add any extra work.
So I went to my local supermarket to get some and they only had the Johnson’s brand which were $9.30 for 100. WHAT??? I have bought disposable liners in the generic brands, back when I was first pregnant, that were only a couple of bucks. At that price the flushable liners are better value.
So I went to another supermarket that didn’t have ANY, then another supermarket that didn’t have ANY and finally found some at my local Safeway $2.34 for 100 in the Safeway brand. That was the price I was expecting to pay, but I wasn’t expecting it to take four supermarkets before I found some, they used to be available in every supermarket.
The Modern Cloth industry is no doubt responsible. We don’t use disposable liners anymore. Nappies like the Mandy Mac nappy have a reusable liner that is built into the nappy, so you don’t need to use something to keep baby’s skin dry. Other people use polar fleece which they buy at Spotlight and cut up to use in nappies. Very few people using modern cloth nappies use disposable nappy liners. So I guess we are to blame for the lack of demand!
Now, I’m using flushable liners at the moment as I find they are the best thing for morning sickness. Just the thought of a pooey nappy is enough to make me want to retch. However I can’t use disposable nappies, because the chemicals in them smell worse than the most horrid poo you can imagine. So flushable liners have been my Godsend.
I’m just passing the twelve week mark and really starting to get over the woes of the first trimester. Just in time for the Nappy Hunt too! I’ll be back in a few days to tell you all about that.
Ciao
